Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Ashley J. Holmes as Associate Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning, with responsibility for the Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) and the WIC and DPO programs, effective August 1, 2024.
Dr. Holmes most recently served as Interim Director of Teaching Effectiveness at the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Online Education and Professor of English at Georgia State University. In addition to her faculty role in the department of English, Dr. Holmes served as the Director of Writing Across the Curriculum at GSU from 2018-2023, coordinating and offering pedagogical support for faculty and graduate students. In her interim role, she provided professional development opportunities for faculty and graduate students in all the university’s colleges, schools, and campuses.
Dr. Holmes’ background and Ph.D. are in the areas of rhetoric, composition, and the teaching of English. Her research centers around high-impact practices, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and student success. Her passion for faculty development and pedagogy is evident in her body of work and service, and her research-driven approach is central to her leadership. Her recent book, Learning on Location: Place-Based Approaches for Diverse Learners in Higher Education (Routledge, Nov. 2023) draws on her own teaching as well as interviews with faculty across many disciplines in the U.S. and Canada. She brings a depth of experience teaching and mentoring in both undergraduate and graduate courses.
Many thanks to Dr. Regan A.R. Gurung for his leadership over the last several years as Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director for the Center for Teaching and Learning. In the next several weeks before Dr. Holmes arrives Dr. Gloria Crisp, Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, has agreed to provide leadership for the CTL, for which I am very grateful.
Best,
Alix Gitelman, Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Senior Vice Provost
