Facilitated Zoom webinar/workshop for FYI Friday, October 2021
Transfer student success is essential for equitable outcomes in courses, programs, and institutions. More than ever, we must be ready to support students who are navigating the often complex and challenging transfer transition.
Supporting Transfer Student Success: Five Key Practices is designed to not ask faculty and staff to add another “obligation” to an already full workload. Rather, the hope is to examine current methods with an eye toward identifying some possible new approaches, amplifying effective strategies, and abandoning attitudes and behaviors that result in student disengagement.

Recent explorations including the OSU's transition survey, inclusivity survey & focus groups, and transfer student experience initiative provide insight into the experiences of OSU transfer students. Clear themes emerged around struggles to find a sense of belonging and the desire for deeper connections with both their faculty and their peers. Examples for how colleges and central units may promote sense of belonging for transfer students is provided.

Co-presented with First-Year Experience Coordinator during OSU Training Days, November 2019
Presenters disaggregated data presented at the "Navigating the Student Transition" workshop in January 2019. This presentation focused on Corvallis campus only, and with new information related to new-to-OSU students' access to resources and offices on campus.
Focus still prompted attendees to consider the cumulative, interactive impact of these items and their effect on our students’ experience: while a student is trying to determine where they fit within Beaver Nation, they are simultaneously questioning if they can afford their education at OSU, potentially experiencing failure in OSU’s classrooms, operating within new and varied technology, struggling to make informed, timely decisions related to their academic success, navigating complex support systems within each college, and encountering lack of connection with faculty. While this report organizes student transition issues around a few central themes, it is the interaction of these themes that truly shapes how a student experiences their time at OSU.

Co-presented with First-Year Experience Coordinator during Undergraduate Student Success Initiative Summit, March 2019
This session explores how first-year and transfer students experience academic advising, faculty interactions, in-class settings and financial matters. We will examine the degree to which students feel that they belong, the ways in which their expectations intersect with the reality of college life and the role of technology.
